Applesauce Recipe
Do you buy applesauce from the grocery store, or don’t even know what an applesauce is. No need to be embarrassed, years ago I had no idea what an applesauce was until I came across recipes like apple mouse, apple pie etc.
Applesauce is one of those recipes that anyone can make, it stores really well and can be served in different ways. There are varieties of apples and you can use whichever kind you prefer.
Here are a few suggestions if you want a natural sweet enough applesauce with no added sugar:
Golden delicious, Gala, Honey crisp and Fuji which I used for this recipe. Note that you can use 3 or more different apples for an applesauce. For my applesauce recipe, you will need:
Ingredients:
4 Fuji apples (600 gram) (about 21 oz)
Apple juice or water (½ cup) (118 ml)
Cinnamon ¼ teaspoon.
Procedure:
Wash, peel and core the apples. Cut the apples into bite sizes, the bigger the sizes, the longer the cooking time.
In a saucepan, add apple juice or water, I used homemade apple juice to give it a more apple flavor. Check out my juice recipe if you haven’t already. Add apples and cinnamon. You can throw in some lemon zest (which is the outer skin of a lemon) if you don’t like cinnamon and give it a quick stir.
Cover and let apples simmer for 25–30 minutes, again depending on how big or small you cut your apples. When the apples are done, they will be soft and you can easily mash it with the back of a fork.
I use a potato masher, but you can use a food processor or even a wooden spoon to mash the apples until you get your preferred texture. Depending on how sweet your taste buds are, you may or may not need extra sugar. If you do, you can add the sugar at this point.
Applesauce can be eaten with roasted pork, duck and other meat. You can also enjoy it as a desert with wipe cream or vanilla ice–cream. Put it in a puff pastry with a sprinkle of brown sugar, a few cubes of cold butter and bake it for a quick apple strudel or pie. I use it in my Teething cookies as a natural sweetener.
Tip: If you are making large amount, sprinkle cut apples with a bit of lemon juice to prevent the apples from turning brown in color.
I hope you start making your own applesauce from now on.
